SIFT is a self-cleaning litter box built around the part most units get wrong: the waste drawer. After every cycle the drawer lid closes, so waste is sealed rather than sitting open in a compartment underneath, and the room smells like a room rather than announcing that a cat lives there.
The compartment is large, which means fewer changes, and changing it is opening the drawer lid and swapping the bag - no dismantling the unit, no tipping a tray into a bin bag over a kitchen floor. It works with standard bags rather than a proprietary cartridge, so the running cost stays at the price of ordinary bin liners.
Between cycles the litter bed is left level and usable, which is what keeps a cat returning to it rather than finding somewhere else. Empty the drawer regularly regardless of capacity, keep the unit on a level floor, use a clumping litter suited to sifting mechanisms, and introduce a cat to it gradually with the mechanism switched off.
